Industrial Waste — Certified as Skincare.

The use of synthetic chemicals in textile production harms the environment, workers, and wearers. To solve this, Japanese startup AIZOME developed an innovative dyeing method that uses only water, medicinal plants and ultrasound. Because of that, not only do the textiles come with additional health benefits — but also the wastewater. So to demonstrate the quality of AIZOME’s textiles, we bottled the wastewater, branded it as a premium skincare product, and sent it to key opinion leaders in the textile industry.

Packaging Design

The packaging is made from recycled and recyclable cardboard, layered for stability. This eliminates the need for an outer box, effectively reducing emissions. The front cover comes in three variations, with thin lines cut between the holes to form the Japanese characters 藍 (indigo), 流 (flow), and 拾 (cherish).

Editorial Design

Three printed materials — a set of leaflets, a booklet, and a poster — provide information on the history, AIZOME, and WASTECARE™. The reader is guided by a six-by-six grid pin registry that binds the perforated materials, inspired by the dyeing process. Likewise the color of the materials intensifies, from translucent white to dark indigo.

Leaflet

A set of four double-sided leaflets in translucent, unbleached white paper, representing undyed natural cotton balls, introduce the reader to traditional Japanese indigo dyeing. The custom Ultra One type, used for titles, combines ultrasound frequency waves with traditional Mincho typeface, reflecting the unification of tradition and science.

Booklet

The 12-page booklet in landscape format is colored in soft blue to reflect the beginning of the dyeing process. It relies on various data visualization styles to illustrate the AIZOME company timeline, development, technological details, and benefits of the innovative AIZOME ULTRA™ method.

Poster

The 210mm x 190mm poster colored in deep indigo puts data in context to illustrate the advantages of AIZOME ULTRA™ over industrial dyeing with synthetic chemicals. It also explains the background and benefits of the WASTECARE™ night serum and provides directions for its application.

Product

WASTECARE™ is a dermatologically certified skincare product. Three drops applied on the face and neck before going to bed are recommended for various health benefits. A few drops of organically grown natural stabilizers and preservatives (citric acid) were added to the original industrial wastewater to guarantee usability after shipping.

Product Design

To highlight that WASTECARE™ is delivered straight from the factory, a rectangular lab glass vial was repurposed as a container. The custom lid is made from recycled aluminum and ergonomically designed. For easy application, a reusable glass pipette without a plastic suction cup was chosen.

Design System and Typography

The WASTECARE™ design system is rooted in tradition and science – Japanese characters and molecular structures. The resulting grid forms the foundation for all artwork, from print to digital. A custom type was designed based on the key element of AIZOME’s innovative technology – the waveforms of ultrasound.
